Heritage rules before wind ratings

The old village of Stanford is a proclaimed heritage site, with building rules maintained by the Stanford Conservation Trust to protect its Cape Victorian and Edwardian architecture — regarded as one of the best-preserved villages in the Western Cape. On a street-facing elevation in the old village, what a blind or awning looks like from the road, and whether it visually competes with the original window joinery, matters as much as what it does functionally. We default to timber venetians and heritage-sympathetic fabric tones on these houses rather than anything that reads as modern hardware bolted onto a Victorian sash.

Being inland on the Klein River rather than directly on the open coast, Stanford also carries a genuinely different exposure to Hermanus, Kleinmond or Gansbaai: less direct salt spray, but real river-valley damp, particularly on north- and east-facing rooms near the water. Moisture-tolerant products — sealed-finish timbers, aluminium where the joinery allows it — matter more here than wind-sensor motorisation, which is the opposite priority order to a cliffside Hermanus install.

Newer builds on the edges of the village, away from the proclaimed heritage core, have more freedom — that's usually where a folding-arm awning or a wider modern roller blind actually gets specified, once we've established which side of the heritage line a property sits on.
