About Whale Coast Blinds, Hermanus to Gansbaai
Whale Coast Blinds makes and fits window shading to the size of your own openings along the Overberg coast, for homes built to face open water rather than a sheltered bay. Hardware is specified for salt air and for a coastline that takes weather from two directions, and nothing is quoted sight-unseen.
The service, stated without decoration
Roller blinds in sunscreen and blockout, day and night banded blinds, aluminium and timber venetians, cellular honeycomb, vertical and panel blinds, concealed and recessed blinds, skylight and shaped blinds, external venetian blinds, roller shutters, folding-arm awnings, zip screens and motorised control, each manufactured for the elevation it will live on. There is no stock range, because a glass-walled Hermanus rebuild and an Onrus cottage do not share a window between them, and the same product gets a different hardware spec depending on how many metres it sits from the surf.
Why this coast is specified differently
Walker Bay sits open to the confluence of the Atlantic and Indian systems rather than tucked behind a mountain the way a False Bay suburb is. So it takes both the summer south-easter and the full force of winter cold-front north-westerlies making landfall, and every exterior product here is rated for two wind directions, not the one most sheltered suburbs design around. Salt gets the blame before the sun does: the small metal parts, the bracket, the fastener and the joint, are what the coast attacks long before the fabric shows anything.
Whale season shapes the household's afternoon too. Southern right whales are in the bay from June to December, and for most of the year the point of a sea-facing window is the water, not a reason to black it out. Sunscreen fabric that keeps the view while cutting glare is the default on living-room glass, with blockout reserved for bedrooms and nurseries. Cord and chain tensioners go on every corded product, and nurseries are steered toward cordless or motorised control with nothing dangling.
Where we measure and fit
Hermanus and the towns around it. Kleinmond, a mountain-and-estuary village sitting in a genuine wind funnel at the edge of the Kogelberg. Onrus and Vermont, sheltered by their own lagoon and dunes, where older vernacular cottages sit beside newer beach houses and privacy from close neighbours drives the spec as much as sun. Stanford, inland on the Klein River, a proclaimed heritage village with river-valley damp and less direct salt. And Gansbaai with De Kelders, a working harbour town and clifftop homes fully open to the south Atlantic, where every exterior product gets the fullest salt and wind rating in the range as a default.
Four steps, no surprises
An enquiry arrives through the form or the chat: tell us about your windows, your rooms and which stretch of coast you are on. One of our expert consultants will contact you shortly to arrange a free in-home measure. There is no hold music; a consultant arranges a time that suits your property. On site every window is measured, the fixing and the exposure are assessed properly, and the fabric, the finish and the control are decided for the salt, the wind and the light that elevation actually takes, with samples in hand.
A written, itemised quote follows with a line for every window and no pressure to decide on the spot. Once approved, the order is made to those figures and fitted cleanly by hand, then handed over working, with the operation demonstrated before we leave. The price is set at the measure and confirmed in writing, never over the phone, and lead times are confirmed in the same written quote.
What we do not do or claim
Our roller shutters are a shading product, managing sun, heat, glare and blackout on the outside of the glass with an insulating air gap on a cold night. They hold no security rating whatsoever; a security-rated product is a separate product and a separate conversation, quoted on request. An awning is a shade product, not a rain product, and wind ratings are real limits rather than marketing language. We do not quote outdoor shading off a photograph, and we do not promise approvals: nothing on this site is a heritage or planning opinion, an environmental opinion or a wind-load calculation for your building.
Getting in touch
The route in is the enquiry form or the on-page chat. Say which town you are in, which way the good glass faces and which room is the problem, and one of our expert consultants will contact you shortly to arrange your free in-home measure and a written per-window quote afterwards. Anything you send is used only to arrange that call-back and to price the work, and is handled under POPIA; it is never shared or sold. The measure costs nothing and there is no obligation either way.
